Here are some messages about the list itself: the very first message in the archives, some discussion about chaging the name of the list, and results of list-member surveys.
Also included are comments that reveal ``personal'' information about the listmembers -- their age, the fact that they have kids, etc.
You may run across a message that doesn't seem to belong here;
sometimes this is because it's related to a picture
in the archives at ftp.tcp.com
.
(For example, Joey Richard's 6 Aug 93 message that mentions ``Half Pint''.)
Well, Greg, you've gone and done it. I knew it was only a matter of time. ^_^What did everyone think of the Valentines day episode? Flip was a real creep... And Sam didn't bat an eye! MAN...
The picture of Nickelodeon Studios at the end was pretty cool, tho.
<poke> comments!
Well, excited that I've been added to the Clarissa mailing list, and then finding out that there is an FTP archive, I eagerly FTP'ed to ferkel.ucsb.edu unfortunately, there was nothing there! The directory /pub/clarissa was not to be found! Has anyone else had this problem or was it just moved?
Well, the reason for this is that the list is just a few days old, and thus there is nothing to archive yet.
OK, I'm open to suggestions for a more interesting list name. One thing is that it should be kept short for ease of typing's sake. One I could think of is CDML for Clarissa Darling Mailing List, in the tradition of CDNN and CDBA. :)
Well, heck, what's wrong with CDNN? I mean, this is a ``Clarissa Darling News Network,'' isn't it? ^_^But, what I had in mind was something less cryptic. Something easily identifiable as being Clarissa-esque.
I just can't think of anything. Yet. ^_^
Hey. I was just wondering if anyone knew what your membership here is. I mean, is it more that 5, 10? Also, how many of you guys know each other? Am I like the only one who doesn't know everyone else personsally?!
There are currently 16 subscribers. Of these, I know 8 personally, and 2 others I kind of know. That still leaves 6 of you who I don't know at all.
Me too. In any event, my wife made me switch channels halfway through the first R&S episode we saw, because she felt it was teaching bad stuff (mostly all the stupid slapstick violence) to our 2-year-old. I tend to agree with my better half on this, even though I have no qualms about our little Marie watching, say, Warner Bros. stuff.
Folks, I just added a new subscriber, and the Clarissa list is now up to a total of 40 subscribers! Who woulda thought??Anyways, I've been noticing some interesting trends in types of subscribers, and I'm getting a bit curious about them. So I thought, why not take a poll?? So if you don't mind, please take a few minutes to fill out this poll and return it to me by email. Poll results that are posted will be limited to cumulative stats, so there will be nothing that can identify what you in particular said. Some of these questions may not make sense to you, but they reflect what I know of the subscriber base so far.
The poll is pretty short, so please take a couple of minutes to fill out and return. And remember to return it to ME, and not the list. Send to jim@pi-chan.ucsb.edu.

10) What is your favorite outfit that Clarissa wears in the opening or closing credits?
11) Why do you think you like to watch Clarissa Explains It All?
Earlier tonight Jingoro and I spent some some time grabbing some nice pictures from the original intro and the ``Ms. Cheesebrow'' episode (as I haven't posted for a while, I'm not too familiar with what eveyone's called this episode). They're all in JPEG format, and are numbered 000-041. When we get another chance, we'll be making some more. For now, however, check these out. They're pretty cool! =)
You know, I just turned 25 today, and I am wondering how old the rest of us all are, because, if you were to think about a bunch of guys about my age talking about a 16 year old (or two, now) all of the time, one could draw some interesting conclusions...<GRIN>
Wow...your birthday is the 16th? Mine too! I just turned 24.As to your question, I have no good answer, speaking for myself. Perhaps we're all closet pedophiliacs; but I doubt it. (Only some of us. ^_^)
The poll given by the list-organizer is supposed to give us information about our ages (as well as our reasons for interest in the show), while protecting the anonimity of the respondents. Unfortunately, threre are no signs of any results from the poll, and my inquiries about its status have not yet been answered. Has anyone successfully communicated with Jim Lick lately? In any case, I volunteer that I am 23 years old. However, I may not be as oriented towards the adult world as most 23-year-olds are (supposed to be).
There were 21 responses to the poll. Here is the first part of the summary of responses:1) Your Age?
Average : 28
Highest : 46
Lowest : 20
Most Common: 23 (5 responses)Observations: this is a lot older than I would have expected!
2) Sex?
Male : 20
Female: 1Observations: Probably has a lot to do with the general lack of females on the network in general.
3) Computer Experience:
(For this one I wanted the highest applicable response. Some folks said they were both d and e, which means I marked them down as e.)
a) I just know how to send email : 0
b) I can find my way around the standard programs : 1
c) I can program a bit too : 3
d) I'm a very experienced programmer : 8
e) I'm a systems administrator for multiuser systems : 9Observations: While computer experience of network users is generally high, this is one of the things that kind of surprised me, in particular how many people are or have been sysadmins. This was something I had noticed earlier and one of the reasons I wanted to do the poll.
4) Have you ever seen any anime (Japanese Animation)?
Yes: 13
No : 85) Are you a fan of anime?
Yes: 9
No : 12Observations: Wow, if this doesn't tip the scales! I knew that a good percentage of Clarissa fans on the list were anime fans, which was the reason for this question, but I was even surprised that it was this strong!
6) What similarities (if any) do you see between Clarissa Explains It All and anime?
Responses included: (excluding ``none'' or ``i dunno'')
the babes man, the babes!
the situation man, the situation!
the clothes man, the clothes!
the scenery man, the scenery!
the music man, the music!the paintbox graphics are often better than the anime backgrounds
Well, C's haircut and huge eyes, her overall bounciness and animated expressions and those quotes that sometimes sound like they've been written in English, translated to Japanese and then translated back to English.
part two soon!
Wow! I'm the youngest here? (20) How freaking weird!?! I thought I'd be leaning towards the older side. But was I wrong!
Not anymore! I just joined -- 15 :> Alas, CEIA is a great show...
JL> Observations: this is a lot older than I would have expected! It's about what I figured...<grin>
BTW, I turned 25 since I answered...
> Observations: While computer experience of network users is generally high,
> this is one of the things that kind of surprised me, in particular how many
> people are or have been sysadmins.I think it's kinda cool! We know what ``our type'' is into.. We are becoming a new ``crew''...away from the ``Cyberpunk'' stuff...We're the Nickpunks...<g>
The appearance of the archived past correspondence of this mailing list gives me the opportunity to see what you (or your ancestors who were present at the time) said about issues that interest me about how CEIA has unfolded. The symbol ``^_^'' appears from Jack Arnold Jr. Where does that come from? (And what exactly does it mean?)There seems to be a message missing, which Jack Arnold Jr. replies to in his message dated Mon, 17 Feb 92 22:41:41 PST (Subject: Re: The FTP at Ferkel).
> The symbol ``^_^'' appears from Jack Arnold Jr.It's a variation on the classic net smiley face or :-). Around these parts we call it an anime smiley. Anime as you may recall is Japanese Animation. It is common for anime characters' eyes to turn into arch-like shapes when smiling or laughing. So the ^'s are the eyes and the _ is the mouth.
> There seems to be a message missing
There were a few messages which I edited out which mostly had administrative type questions. Replies which actually had useful content were retained.
One little thing I _didn't_ like: the saying on Sam's teeshirt in his last scene!
I knew I remembered something about his shirt, but what did it say, I forgot.
``Forty's not old for a tree''.(Guess who turned 35 last month.)
I am 13 years old and a big CEIA fan. I am using my fathers INTERNET account to access this mailing list. Last month during a vacation to Orlando, we got to visit Nickelodeon Studios. Because of a serious illness I had, it was arranged to get a special ``VIP'' tour of the studios, including watching them tape CEIA. The taping of CEIA is not open to the public, so this was a special deal that required pulling some strings.I got pictures taken of me with Melissa and Sean O'neal. Both Melissa and Sean are real nice people.
At Nick studios, there seem to be two CEIA related things hanging on the walls. One is a CEIA sign next to a ``Total Panic'' sign above an exit in the Game Lab. The other is a color picture of the Darling Family at the exit of the tour. The picture is the same as the bw clarissacard.gif, except it is in color and not reversed.Anyway, I uploaded into the incoming clarissa directory two gifs. Jim Lick should move them to their right place. One is of the CEIA sign near a ``Total Panic'' sign.
The other is the color picture of the Darling family. I've only made a first pass at scanning in the Darling Family, and I'm not quite satisified with it. I'm going to have to make another try later.
I cannot believe the guide lists Are you afraid of the dark with a higher rating than Clarissa - at least with my kids (4 kids under 9) the order they like snick is Ren-Stimpy, Clarissa, Are you afraid, the dancing show where we all leave the room and go eat pizza <grin>...
Robert asks if Melissa knows about this list.I don't think so. But I have written her, and if she writes back I'll tell her in my next letter.
About the only way you'll get into watch CEIA being taped is to know someone, or have some deadly illness like cancer, which I had. My tour was arranged by the Make A Wish Foundation.
Hi! It's Valerie here again. Philip asked about getting the photo of MJH and I scanned. I will probably be able to get the picture scanned, but it could take awhile because my dad's work just got a scanner, but they haven't figured out how to use it yet.
Gentle folk,I've uploaded an image of one of our favorite actresses to
ftp.tcp.com: pub/clarissa/incoming/melissa.jpg
This version is 640x480x24. Since it was acquired on an Amiga, a version with non-square pixels is also available upon request.
There was a question about MJH in my local paper, in a syndicated column by Dick Kleiner.-------------------------------------------------------------- Q. Please tell me more about Melissa Joan Hart, who plays Clarissa on Nickelodeon. - A.K., Orange, Calif. A. Melissa Joan Hart -- her friends call her Half Pint -- is 17, still going to school. She comes from New York and began acting in commercials when she was 4. --------------------------------------------------------------There was a tiny picture of her, which I didn't even notice until I started typing this. She looks much older than Clarissa in the picture.
TV Guide: ``...in which Clarissa experiences a close encounter of the romantic kind when best friend Sam decides that she's the perfect girl and asks her out.'' And the ``Frozen Ghost'' Afraid? episode is mentioned too, along with a picture of Melissa, looking slighty grungy, from the Afraid? episode. (The picture will be scanned.)
BTW, there's a scan of the Clarissa 'Car Trips' article from Nick Mag #1 on ftp.tcp.com:/pub/clarissa/images/cartrips-p1.jpg and cartrips-p2.jpg. While I tried to trim down the margins, the images are still kinda large.
And it looks like this list has a new home now; thanks to the Powers That Be at ftp.com for the disk space and cycles. Though the old addresses -- [e-mail address deleted], and [e-mail address deleted] -- should still be usable, as it looks like they've just been aliased to [e-mail address deleted] and [e-mail address deleted]. (Since I'm sending this to the old address, if you see this then I guess that confirms the old address is still usable.) So the change should be transparent.
For Everyone's Information:As of September First, Nickelodeon, an American channel devoted to daily children's programming and nightly family programming, is going to be broadcasted to the United Kingdom for the first time.
