These are the results of a poll I conducted on the ``clarissa'' mailing list, 1-26 Apr 97.
Thanks to Joe Armenio, Bill Carper, Don Ferry, Lars H. and Harry Murchison for helping to create the poll.
Thanks also to everyone who responded to the poll -- by far the longest and most demanding one so far!
[top | poll | general | summary | bottom]
This is more or less how the poll appeared on the list. There was an appendix to the poll which listed episode titles and notable guest appearances for CEIA and STTW. I have removed this along with various comments referring to it and to pages at my web-site.
Each question number below is linked to the summary of responses for that particular question.

27. There has been discussion in the past about renaming the list (i.e., calling it ``melissa'') or creating another list for whatever reason (e.g., one reserved for Melissa news, one devoted to STTW, etc.). [top | poll | general | summary | bottom]
We start with a little general information about the responses and some information about the list membership as a whole.
There were 45 responses to the poll. To determine the response rate, we need the total number of list members. The following table shows how many members were subscribed to the list and the digest version of it, based on ``who clarissa'' messages sent to Majordomo at various times during the time the poll was taken.
               Members
  Date List Digest Total

  --------- ---- ------ -----
Averages 218 32 249 (doesn't add up due to rounding)
Since the 12 Apr 97 membership best reflects the ``average'', we use it to calculate the...
response rate: 45/249 = 18.1%
Compare this to the previous polls:
Jan/Feb 93: 21/ 40 = 52.5% Apr/May 95: 46/120 = 38.3% Apr/May 96: 40/144 = 27.8%
The poll was posted to the list three times:
9:55pm on Tue, 1 Apr 97 5:50am on Wed, 9 Apr 97 12:05pm on Thu, 17 Apr 97
Times are for the central U.S. A correction to one of the questions was posted at 9:15pm on Wed, 2 Apr 97. A ``last call for list poll responses'', which extended the deadline for ``a few days'', was posted at 5:00pm on Tue, 22 Apr 97.
The following display shows the day each response was received. The letters correspond to the days of the week: sUn, Mon, Tue, Wed, thuR, Fri, sAt. (Actually, this only counts the first message from each person. Some people responded in two or three separate messages. Also, I followed up on some responses with questions or requests to correct mistakes or misunderstandings.)
1- 5 Apr | W W W W W W R R R R R A 6-12 Apr | M M M T W W W W W W F F A 13-19 Apr | U U W R R R F F F A A 20-26 Apr | U M T W W R R A
I responded a little later, since I was the one conducting the poll. It took me a couple of days to finish, but I finally ``sent myself'' my response on Tue, May 6th. (!!)
To get an idea of the makeup of the list as a whole, we may examine the e-mail addresses which consistute the actual ``list''. The following information is based on the combined list and digest membership on 12 Apr 97.
  249 total
      218 (87.6%) on list
       31 (12.4%) on digest
Five addresses are common to both the list and digest, so...
  244 unique e-mail addresses
113 (46.3%) of these give a name in their subscription address
                  -- e.g.: Donald Lancon <dcljr@foo.bar.edu>
(not counting those with a name in their e-mail
                  address itself -- e.g., <Donald.Lancon@foo.bar.edu>)
4 ( 1.6%) have a username with an obvious connection to Melissa
                  ('mjh', 2 'obkb's and a 'melissa' -- although maybe
that person's name is really Melissa!)
I also tried to whittle the list down to unique individuals. Based just on the addresses and names themselves and my knowledge of the people who post regularly from multiple addresses, I came up with the following info...
1 member is subscribed to the list and the digest, each twice
3 others are subscribed once each to the list and the digest
2 are subscribed to the list under two different addresses
1 is subscribed to the list under three addresses
So all this leads to the estimate that there are...
239 unique individuals on the list and digest
Note: This doesn't take into account the fact that some e-mail addresses may be lists themselves, distributing messages to more than one person!
Anyway, of these 239 ``individuals''...
208 (87.0%) are on list only
26 (10.9%) are on digest only
      4 ( 1.7%) are on both
This info is based on the 244 unique e-mail addresses.

We now examine the actual responses to the poll. When there are non-responses to a question, percentages are calculated out of the number who did respond.

16 (36.4%) are younger than 21 28 (63.6%) are older than 21
Melissa turned 21 on 18 Apr 97. Since 3 of the 20-year-olds responded before this date, some of them could still be older than Melissa (i.e., if they turned 21 after they responded but before Apr 18th). So you can't necessarily replace ``21'' by ``Melissa'' in the above statements. (But close enough, right?)

This is where I should insert my spiel about ``non-response bias''. See the 1996 poll summary for the full discussion. Nutshell version: Since participation was voluntary, these figures probably don't accurately represent the entire list membership. Keep this is mind when interpreting these poll results.

The ``Why?'' part of this question was new this year.
33 gave a reason for their preference 7 didn't
Note: The reasons are given in alphabetical order within each season.
Actually, I may not really like the 1st season better than the others, but you said to choose one. :) I like the spirit of Clarissa in this season and the edge and quirkiness of the situations and interactions. Clarissa Was Marshall's Precious Little Girl it has a lot to do with the development of the characters more chaotic, elvis (the alligator) She's damn adorable! the cast seemed so lively and well directed the writing was wackier and less naturalistic -- how did all that stuff (barbells, huge cable spool) get up in Clarissa's bedroom? was more unique
Because she was still young and i liked her clothes Good look, good acting, best facial expressions I have no idea because I watch it only occasionaly when it's on. UK terrestrial is now broadcasting season 2, so let's go with that... I prefer the younger Clarissa, and the 'rough edges' in the first season had been eliminated. (This is an extremely difficult question :-P ) it's not as stupid as the first season and not as boring as the fourth season. No reason! The show was still fresh, and Mel was at her cutest
Clarissa isn't that young anymore; some of my favorite episodes I dunno...I just do. I think Melissa really matured as an actress during the third season: her performances are subtler, with better comic timing. Also, I think the writing was, in general, most consistent during the third season. Melissa hadn't yet grown out of the part, yet still had that girlish charm more mature MJH most consistent Most of the classic episodes of CEIA are in season three (IMO) - The Silent Treatment, Take My Advice...Please! etc. This is a toughie (both choice and reason). I suppose it's because I find these episodes funny and well-written. :-)
  C-girl is older and wiser.
Either first or fourth. The first because they were still really
experimenting with the form, and the fourth because they'd nearly
perfected it. And because Herself was at her cutest.
i don't know.... i never really thought in terms of seasons. i like
the ones where ferguson is tall. whatever season had ferguson
explains it all or the one where clarissa got tv sickness i think.
no... i really don't know. it's quite beyond my comprehension.
I think as Melissa matured we became to see a much friendlier side
of her, she seemed(and indeed did) become warmer and more intelligent
and I also believe that in series four we seen much more Melissa and
less Clarissa, a classic example being(and forgive but I forget which
episode) where she opens a drink bottle while sitting at the table
and _Melissa_ begins to smile at the camera as it fades to white.
[Note from dcljr: This person noted that a lot of what he said
here applies to season three as well.]
It was more modern, Clarissa was older, and the picture was clearer
mainly because she looks more grown up
  Melissa looks best in it!
Melissa seemed more mature in the role of Clarissa.
  Melissa's looking her best :)
  She's Older

I took everyone's ``likes'' and ``dislikes'' and grouped them by general topic, as I did last year. In doing so, I often changed capitalization to make everything lower-case; my apologies if I did that to something you capitalized for effect. Also, sometimes I removed unnecessary phrases such as ``I like'' or ``I don't like''.

Clarissa's cute love that missing tooth she is very pretty
Clarissa's Character, attitude in CEIA Clarissa's engaging persona clarissa's funny faces Clarissa's personality Clarissa's sarcasm Clarissa's self-confidence Clarissa's spunk & energy Clarissa's weirdness coolnes of clarissa
I always thought Joe O'Connor was pretty funny liked the characters other actors
Clarissa and Marshall's rapport great interaction with Sam interactions between characters
  simple concept
  the concept
  the look/creativity - production etc.
the nature of the show as determined by its concept, construction,
      and situations (Mitchell Kriegman's offspring)
good writing most of the scripts the writing
  funny
funny (lines are really witty, sharp)
it filled a gap that was absent among the other programmes of its
type in England, there were kids shows, but none as funny or
      intelligent as CEIA
  its freshness/humor
  it's funny
still amusing, even after repeated viewings
the campy off-the-wall sense of humor in the show
the comedy of it, especially some of the things the writers added
that the age groups it was aimed at wouldn't have picked up like
how she often mis-quotes famous quotes or makes classic mistakes
      as to who said what
  the show is humorous
the shows subtle humor, perhaps even above the target age group, is
      refreshing
  very funny
  plot
  the stories are quite good
the 'storyline' of each episode and the way in which they are
      portrayed to the viewer
it's a diffrent kind of sitcom (or something else) its originality originality of show originality of the series the unique style of the whole serial very original!
it's just a genuinely classy show all round its style and attitude moral quality of characters quality of the show subtle unlike its rivals, it has a certain degree of style and intelligence "wholesome" without being cloying
Breaking the fourth wall. I love any show like that. 4th-wall violation off beat format (breaking the fourth wall, computer games...) the fourth wall narrative format
its whimsical, almost surreal nature: breaking of the "fourth
wall," odd names, use of animation & graphics, etc.
  overexaggerated plots and characters
  the surrealism
  the madness
realistic relationship between Clarissa and Ferguson -- no matter
how much they claim to hate each other, each would step up on the
other's behalf if it became necessary
  true life type situations
Clarissa's monologues cloths her computer game things openig the alternate reality clips the dream sequences the ladder sam used
Clarissa has great taste in computers don't really know, everything about the show's GREAT! nearly everything else not afraid to skewer "cultural icons" (correct term?) such as TV no "very special episodes" plenty of opportunities for great screen grabs the computer

it finished prematurely it should have gone on for one more season it's not taping to this date no longer in production only 65 episodes only 65 episodes series was too short that it couldn't have gone on forever that its over :-( there are only 65 episodes too few episodes!
show is too short there are no 'two part' or 'extended length' episodes
cheap Nick production lack of merchandizing/promotions surrounding the show that it's now on before I get home from work the way it was handled by nick (merchandise ect.) video quality of Nick broadcasts
Clarissa's contempt for the nerdy kids at school; I guess we all need
      someone to look down on!
  Clarissa's infatuation with Clifford
Clarissa sometimes seems just a little too earnest for my taste. I
      like flighty.
that Clarissa went from liking cool things in the first season like
TMBG and Echo and the Bunnymen, to liking Nirvana and Pearl Jam
      in later seasons
the lack of development of Clarissa's romantic or love interests
  the relationship with Clifford S.
clarissa's hypocritical foes lack the subtlety of true wit. they
      are way too overdone.
  Clarissa's mum
  Clifford
  Ferg
  Ferguson
  Ferguson
Janet Darling (the only character I dislike)
lack of stronger girl characters for Clarissa to play against
  lack of stronger mother characterization
  Sam
  Sam is irritating
  Elizabeth Hess
poor acting (mainly bad pacing of dialogues which ruins many lines)
some bad acting by secondary characters
some of the characters(eg, Clifford Spleenherfer(sp?)
some of the horrible acting (especially in bit parts)
supporting cast (Elizabeth Hess, Sean O'Neal, the kid who played
Clifford) is not always up to scratch
the limited acting skills of the girl who played Hillary
changes in set and teeth slipped under viewer's nose as if it
      required no explanation
that the stories never have any sense of continuity
the disappearance of Elvis after the first season
the inconsistencies present in the writing (ie the Darling's
geographical location, lack of attention to detail and
      contradictions from season to season)
the way they pulled "best friend" Olivia out of thin air
too many inconsistencies throughout the series that could have been
      avoided with more careful planning
lack of pushing the envelope in later episodes as Mitchell Kriegman
     said
later episodes didn't get to follow the course Mitchel Kriegman
wanted, which I'd like to see
occasional lapses in the quality of writing (especially in the last
      season)
some later episodes not up to par
as Clarissa's confidantes we should have gotten to see her start
driving, graduate from jr. high, and such; should know what
happened with Clifford, Bouncy Balls business, etc.
inconsistency of ending of series (what happened to the drivers
      license, graduation, etc.
they never finished ICFSE [note from dcljr: "It Came From Somewhere
Else", the thing they tagged onto the end of "The Darling Wars"
      (#128)]
we never got to see Clarissa get her driver's license
juvenile behaviour esp. in first season
  somes shows are babyish
the way some of the jokes are made too childish, like in "Haunted
House" where its getting quite amusing and they go down to the
basement to see Ferguson's 'secret weapons lab', it ruined the
      atmosphere of the show
a little Hokey sometimes incongruities (impossible events in an otherwise realistic sitcom) it can be repetitive the style (I prefer STTW)
laugh track laugh track that annoying laugh track!
  cheesey sound effects
Clarissa's little computer games irritated me
  Clarissa's Dad's Clothes
i really hate when they rap, e.g. sam & marshall
Needless fantasy sequences. Most are good, but there are some that
      just grate on me.
  theme song
the newer opening sequence, the old one (with Clarissa in her PJ's)
      was better
  TOFU!
to less freedom from her parents
  too much sibling rivalry
  UFO-slamming
dislikes? - no dislikes at all (maybe the declaration "just for
      kids")
people think my habit is abnormal
love to hate that missing tooth [note from dcljr: one of this
person's "Likes" was "love that missing tooth"]
The fact that I was not Sam. A minor dislike, to be sure, but I
really can't come up with a third, so that will have to do.

102 School Picture (I love when she does the Salt and Pepper bit) "Crush" (114): A far better illustration of love's mysteriousness than the Clifford Spleenhurfer episodes. Contains my favorite Clarissa line: "As goes the weather, so goes the nation, and so shall we thrive or perish!" "Janet's Boyfriend" (127): An underrated episode: sharply written, with a lively performance by Melissa. 131 Punch the Clocks (I love Cliford) "The Flu" (140): The scene where Clarissa administers to her parents in their bedroom is my all-time favorite. "Here comes the choo-choo..." "A Little Romance" (147): Sweet & funny; I also liked the "Rear Window" subplot. "The Final Episode" (165): Just the right mix of irony and sentiment.

This is a feeble attempt to give an overall ranking to the episodes. It uses the simple formula: score = # favorite - # least-favorite. If anyone has a better scoring scheme, lemme know.
The format is: score (total no. of votes) "episode title" (prod. #)
By the way, within each score, episodes are ordered by production number.

Bill Carper originally came up with the idea of asking about people's favorite and least-favorite ``guests'' and ``supporting actors/actresses'' on both CEIA and STTW. I suggested that we have people rank the main actors and characters and then just state their favorite and least-favorite guest players.

As stated before, Bill Carper originally suggested a question about ``guests'' on CEIA and STTW. There was some discussion about how best to ask this question, since there seemed to be general agreement that it wasn't worth considering actors and characters separately, as in the previous question. I finally decided to just leave it ambiguous, listing both the actors and their roles in the ``Appendix'', but using the word ``guests'' in the question. Some people answered using the actor name, some the character, and some both. Occasionally this led to problems. See the notes below.

1 non-response [i.e., only gave least-favorite] 7 Michelle Trachtenberg as Elsie Soaperstein (#151) 4 Sheeri Rappaport as Piper Henderson (#156) 3 Heather Mac Rae as Aunt Mafalda (#106,#118) 3 David Eck as Clifford Spleenhurfer (#107,#125,#131,#142,#145) 3 Happy Cole as... [see below] 2 David Watts as Flip Fontana (#114) 2 Sara Burkhardt as Hillary (#123,#126,#129) 2 Kristian Truelsen as Mr. Woolcott (#164) 1 Theresa Tirino as Jody (#102) 1 Cassidy Rae as Elise Quackenbush (#124) 1 Susan Greenhill as Dangerous Debbie (#130,#149) 1 Martha Randall as Amelia Darling (#138) 1 Nicole Leach as Olivia DuPris (#141,#145,#150,#153) 1 Russell Koplin as Eve Biderberg (#146) 1 Bob Rogerson as Arnie Anders (#158) 1 Kelly the dog as Sarge, the Soaperstein's collie (#161)
Note: 1 vote for Happy Cole was as the Ace Delivery Guy in #122, 1 was as the postal carrier in #141, and 1 left the role unspecified. Also, in the ``Appendix'', Kristian Truelsen's first name was spelled as given in the credits for his appearances as Mr. Crepplehorn in #135 (``Kristian'') and Mr. Woolcott in #164 (``Christian''). 1 vote for ``Christian Truelsen'' didn't specify the role, so I assumed they meant Woolcott.

1 Doug Truelsen as Turner B. Gerhard (#155)
1 Sheeri Rappaport as Piper Henderson (#156)
1 Kristian Truelsen Mr. Woolcott (#164)
Note: Jason A. Harger appeared as contestant Sheldon Wurtenhoffer in #109 and J. Elliot Fundsworth III in #122. Happy Cole appeared as the Ace Delivery Guy in #122 and the postal carrier in #141.
By the way, 1 person voted for ``Aunt Mafalda'' as both favorite and least-favorite.

40 responses 9 (22.5%) no, I'm not taping them to keep 11 (27.5%) yes, I have some episodes on tape 5 (12.5%) yes, I have most episodes on tape 15 (37.5%) yes, I have all episodes on tape
Fewer people, proportionally, are taping CEIA to keep than last year (about 78% vs. 90%), but that's not surprising given that there are almost twice as many list members now (about 250 vs. 145) and many of the newbies probably came to the list after seeing Melissa in STTW. (But more about this later.)

Note that people in countries outside the U.S. couldn't have seen all 19 episodes unless they got tapes from people in the U.S. or had access to ABC satellite feeds. If you're interested, see Worldwide airings of STTW for what episodes had been shown in various countries at the time the poll was first posted.

As with the CEIA version of this question, I have changed some of the capitalization (except when it appeared to be for effect) and removed most of the punctuation (except when the response comprised more than one sentence) in order to make the responses a little more uniform. I've also removed unnecessary leading words -- such as ``the'', ``it's'' and ``it has'' -- on most of the responses.
As usual, the comments have been grouped by general topic and alphabetized (ignoring spaces and punctuation) within each group.

Third Aunt From the Sun (by far -- I HATED this one)
The episode with the mean algebra teacher (Donald in 10 years) ;-D
  012. "Jenny's Non-Dream" I can honestly say that I found all the
others to be of virtually equal and so I can't find three
      least-favourites.
  009. "Magic Joel" (all but "Emma" scenes)

This is a feeble attempt to give an overall ranking to the episodes. It uses the simple formula: score = # favorite - # least-favorite. If anyone has a better scoring scheme, lemme know.
The format is: score (total no. of votes) "episode title" (prod. #)
+8 ( 8) "Sweet & Sour Victory" (#010) +8 (10) "First Kiss" (#018) +6 ( 6) "A Halloween Story" (#006) +6 (10) "Cat Showdown" (#020) +5 ( 5) "A Girl and Her Cat" (#011) +4 ( 4) "Terrible Things" (#003) +4 ( 6) "Dream Date" (#007) +4 (10) "Hilda and Zelda: The Teenage Years" (#015) +2 ( 8) "Geek Like Me" (#005) +1 ( 9) "The True Adventures of Rudy Kazootie" (#004) +1 ( 7) "Sabrina Through the Looking Glass" (#014) -1 ( 1) "Bundt Friday" (#002) -1 (15) "Magic Joel" (#009) -2 (12) "Pilot" (#001) -2 (12) "Third Aunt From the Sun" (#008) -2 (10) "Jenny's Non-Dream" (#012) -2 ( 2) "Sweet Charity" (#017) -3 ( 7) "Trial by Fury" (#013) -7 (14) "Mars Attracts!" One person added the following comment:
My rating of Jenny [2] is based on certain episodes where I liked her character; she's not always that interesting, but I think I like her overall. The acting's trickier to judge in the context of all the scenes and episodes of STTW.

This question became a little more complex this year, since we had two series to deal with. (Last year it was just: ``Are you a bigger fan of CEIA or Melissa Joan Hart?'') We finally decided on the wording given above and a separate question (the next one) asking whether people preferred CEIA or STTW.
45 responses 33 (73.3%) Melissa Joan Hart 12 (26.7%) her shows (CEIA and/or STTW)
These two said MJH:
by way of (CEIA) I'm a bigger fan of MJH than her shows overall, but when CEIA was running I may have been at least as big a fan of CEIA, and especially the character Clarissa.
I put this person down under ``her shows'':
well that's hard to say because i like ceia best. then i like sttw era melissa, than i like ceia era melissa, then i like sttw. so really, use that information to answer the question as you would best see fit as you understand your question and my response.

Both! STTW is great, but I can't live without CEIA.
I am unable to make this choice, because I like the shows for
           very different reasons.
       I hate to give a wimpy non-answer, but I really can't decide.
           I love 'em both.
       I love both
Among those with a preference:
24 (60.0%) CEIA 16 (40.0%) STTW
4 gave none
As for the rest... (``non-essential'' initial words edited out)
although made for a young audience, was a lot funnier than STTW
  better facial expressions and timing
  better production
  better situations
  better written
bolder and much saltier than sttw
both are idiotic, but ceia exploits it's idiocy while sttw is a
      victim of it's
character Clarissa: a very engaging and interesting personality with
a strong will who made me like what she was doing even when it
      was mean or crazy
Clarissa had to come up with real solutions, rather than just
      pointing
Clarissa is much cooler than Sabrina
  Clarissa monologues
Clarissa talks to the viewer - I like that
Clarissa was a better-developed character than Sabrina
  concept more subversive
  cooler
  crazier
execution of the show. I enjoy watching Sabrina but I think that
      CEIA has more magic.
Ferguson was a better antagonist than Libby (at least so far)
fresher and more original than STTW

  love that missing tooth
Melissa is a very sweet 16 year old
  Melissa is cuter

  more creative than sttw
  more interesting character
more interesting plots on CEIA - a better production
  more original
  more original
  more sarcastic
  [more] to the point
made fun of life in general =)
  much more believable than STTW
nature of CEIA: a simple domestic environment done in a way that
makes it interesting, with an unusual perspective and a playful,
unconventional format and presentation. This is one reason: I
see this as a coherent quality defining what CEIA is about
  nature of the show
one of the few shows that use actors that are the correct ages to
      actually be in high school
prefer 'Clarissa' over 'Sabrina' as a character
  really unique
situation in the STTW sitcom is corny
slightly more intelligent, less superficial show
  started off stronger
  stronger female lead character
  unique attitude
we have the complete set of episodes to look back on. With STTW,
there is some uncertainty as to its future (where it is going,
how long is it going to be around, is it going to improve and
how much), so there is hesitancy to invest emotionally in it.

The rest said... (``non-essential'' initial words edited out)
  acting is better

  Jenny
  magick!!!
  Melissa wears nicer clothes
  Mel looks better
  MJH is older
  more changing sets
  more fun!
  more 'involved' acting from Melissa
  more mature MJH
  much more mature show
more of Melissa shows through, or at least my 'view' of Melissa.
Whether or not she is more like Sabrina than Clarissa I couldn't
truthfully say but it does seem to me like there is more Melissa
      in the expressions of Sabrina.
  more polished
  more recent work
more up to date with the world, if CEIA was still in production I
      would rate them equally
  never seen CEIA
  never seen CEIA before
Sabrina is a lot mre out going and fun than Clarissa ever was, she
shows a more realistic interpretation of youth culture
seems more open-ended. With a bigger budget, they can do more, and
if it's proportionally as successful to ABC as CEIA was to
Nickelodeon, then it can be HUGE.
  she has better lines
  shown free-to-air here in Australia
shows how she can play different roles
  stories are better
  stories are more interesting
  supporting actors are better

Last year, someone responded to the last question on the poll (the ``any other comments'' question) as follows:
Just one, what about doing a MJH poll ?, ie What is it you like about Melissa ?, what programs have you seen 'Sa in ?, What ones do you like ?, what ones do you dislike ?, What type of film would you like to see her in ?
This lead directly to the inclusion of this question and the next one in this year's poll. For this question, Lars suggested we list a bunch of her appearances and ask people to rate them 1-10. Bill came up with the ``X''-if-you-haven't-seen-it idea.
37 responses 7 non-responses 1 unusable response
(The unusable response was just a bunch of numbers and X's with no corresponding show titles. I couldn't match them up reliably, so I dropped that response.)
In the summary below, you'll see something called ``Mean z-score''. Here's what this means: Each person has their own ideas about what constitutes a ``10'', ``9'', ``8'', etc., performance; consequently, some people rate all of Melissa's stuff very highly while others display greater variability in their ratings. To try to counteract this effect, I computed the mean and standard deviation (a measure of variability) of each respondent's ratings, then ``standardized'' them for each show by subtracting the mean (thereby centering their ratings at 0) and dividing by their standard deviation (making their standard deviation equal to 1). The point of this is that now everyone's ratings are on a common scale: same center and spread. These standardized scores are the z-scores. Conceptually, they indicate how far away from an ``average Melissa performance'' the given performance is, regardless of what numerical rating each person would associate with an ``average Melissa performance''. See?
It's important to realize that while the z-scores for each person must average to zero (proof of this is left as an exercise for the reader), those for each show, averaged over people, don't have to. The average z-score thus reflects, in some sense, the average assessment of how that performance compares to a ``typical'' Melissa performance.
Okay, you can wake up now.

As mentioned above, this question was included mainly because of someone's suggestion in last year's poll.
34 responses 11 non-responses
Instead of grouping the responses, as I did with the CEIA and STTW ``likes'' and ``dislikes'', I decided to summarize them in various ways and then just list the full comments (unedited) below with no grouping scheme (as usual, they're in alphabetical order, ignoring spaces and punctuation).
What follows is an attempt at classifying the various remarks that people made. For each response, I boiled it down to a few key ideas and then collected these and tallied up the number of responses that mentioned each. For example, if someone said ``romantic comedy'', I recorded 1 ``vote'' for each of the movie genres ``romance'' and ``comedy''. I'm not saying this is necessarily the best way of summarizing the responses, but it's the one I decided to use. (Note: This summary doesn't include things people said they didn't want to see Melissa do.)
19 comedy/humor (*) 7 romance (*) 4 action/adventure/thriller 3 drama/suspense 3 science fiction (*) each includes 4 "romantic comedy"
1 coming of age 1 hero type 1 magic/witchcraft 1 girl next door
2 Geena Davis 2 Sandra Bullock (including 1 for Sandra's character in Speed) 1 Helen Hunt 1 Jodie Foster

A comedy, and a sci-fi either futuristic or to do with
      magic/witchcraft .

Annie from out of _Speed_ type of roles
A role like she played in Twisted Desire
  A romantic comedy
a romantic comedy, or anykind of romance film. Something similar to

Basically anything which puts her on the big screen.

Comedy, because it's what she does best. She would have to have the

Drama like The Movie "Wait Until Dark" Comedic Roles where she isn't

Girl next door movies, Disney... that sort of thing
I'd like to see her play an interesting and spirited character in a
film that has some action but is far more intelligent than most
films now tend to be. It should have a sense of humor without
being silly. She could play a person close to her own age who
is comfortable in a position of responsibility.
I like her playing a bad role like Twisted Desire.
I think her strength is comedy, so her first movie role should
probably be comedic. Other than that, I dunno.
I would be happy to see her in whatever type of film or role she
would like to do the most. To me her happiness is more
important than any other consideration(in this matter).
Although it would be nice for her to be in something that was
      very successful.
I would like her to be in the same types of films that Geena Davis
      and Sandra Bullock are in.
I would like to see Melissa star as a rich, powerful, ruthless, and
seductive villainess on a quest for world domination.
I would love to see Melissa reprise the role of Clarissa, either in
a one off-tv special or in a movie.
  Jodie Foster type role
melissa's really good at being dopey, so she should play a dopey
role. clarissa sang about "movies where people are insane"
i think melissa should be insane in a movie. i'd like blazen
happiness, hallucinations, some light violence, and lots and
lots of water to be somehow involved. something very
inapropriate for children, because she needs to stop being so
      sickeningly wholesome all the time.
Romantic comedy and when she feels up to it some dramatic roles.
Maybe even some kind of action picture (with her as the hero,
like Geena Davis in _The Long Kiss Goodnight_, not just some
wilting love interest to be rescued). And of course, is one
lousy nude scene too much to ask for???
Romantic comedy at first (and fercryinoutloud stop playing
teenagers!), then move on to more serious drama as she matures
      and improves.
Serious Science Fiction [eg, one of the upcoming Babylon 5 movies]
or some sort of modern day Comedy.
She's certainly best as a comic actress, and she should stick to
comic roles; "typecasting" isn't necesarily a bad thing when you
play a certain kind of character as well as she does. I'd hate
to see her churning out one "based-on-a-shocking-true-story" TV
flick after another like so many other actors do in an effort to
become more "serious". If she ever gets the itch to be "serious"
she should take a shot at a role in a more sophisticated
      comedy-- a Woody Allen flick or something. I'd love to see that;
I think she could carry off that kind of role very well.
Something more seriously, where she doesn't have to laught all the
      time.
Star in an SF time-travel film, written and directed by me.
  suspense/drama
The ingenue. Something like "All About Eve," but less dramatic,
i.e. the wide-eyed starlet. Comedy in general, but not broad
slapstick. Something subtle and deep. I would kill to see her
      in an Albert Brooks film.

This lists each actress, the total number of times she was cited, the number of times she was ranked #1, #2 and #3, and finally an overall score based on the following formula:

This one was kind of annoying to summarize because people wouldn't stick to choosing one and only one for each category. So I had to fiddle around with the data a litte.
  "" [i.e., no response] = no preference
  "any" = no preference
  "black or brunette" = black
  "Bolnee" = blonde
"don't really care" = no preference
"LOL. Dyed red, with blonde highlights, and a black wig on the
      side." = no preference
  "long (possibly medium)" = long
"Maybe like on the CEIA Opening" [on choice of bangs] = with
"natural (probably brown, at a guess?)" = no preference
  "NOT short" = medium/long
  "shoulder-length" = medium
I called ``black or brunette'' black because brunette (in the sense of brown) wasn't one of the choices. I counted ``long (possibly medium)'' as long because the person seemed to favor long. On the other hand, if someone gave two choices with no apparent preference to either, I gave half a point to each (this only happened with length -- see below).
As you can see, ``no preference'' could either mean they didn't care or they didn't express their preference in terms of the given choices.
And please, no Loreal jokes. ;-)
  blonde (certainly haven't seen black...)
funky (nice change from her usual straight)
  funky (yes, I liked it)
Medium or short, just to spite Don.
red (i don't recall this one but it sounds cool)
straight (and I mean really straight, but not like STTW Movie)
  straight (haven't yet seen `funky')
straight (i never saw crimped or funky)
You didn't ask for specifics but the "long" style I love most is
done up in a bun, with maybe a few strands hanging down...
Note: Melissa wore black wigs a few times and a red one once in CEIA. [Thanks to Dave Harris for reminding me of the red one in ``President Ferguson'' (#117).] Melissa has said that she once dyed her hair red and then had trouble washing it out, but I don't know exactly when this occurred. Was her hair a little red in the 1995 Big Help-A-Thon? I can't tell.
First, each category is summarized independently of the others. (Percentages are computed from those with a preference.)
1 no preference 22.0 (53.7%) long (including 2 half-votes) 17.5 (42.7%) medium (including 3 half-votes) 1.5 ( 3.7%) short (including 1 half-vote)
Note: The half-votes, if you can't figure it out, came from 2 votes for medium/long and 1 for short/medium.
36 (85.7%) straight 4 ( 9.5%) funky 2 ( 4.8%) crimped
2 no preference 22 (55.0%) with 18 (45.0%) without
3 no preference 37 (94.9%) blonde 1 ( 2.6%) red 1 ( 2.6%) black
And now, taking all four categories together...
13 long, straight, blonde, with bangs
9 medium, straight, blonde, without bangs
3 medium, straight, blonde, with bangs
3 long, straight, blonde, without bangs
2 medium or long, straight, blonde, with bangs
2 long, funky, blonde, with bangs
     all others 1 each
(BTW: How do you have long and funky hair?)

1 non-response (among those who gave a "how")
Some people gave a description of when they first saw her instead of a year or month -- for example, ``2nd season'' [of CEIA] or ``When CEIA first started on Nick UK''. Whenever possible, I provided the year or month based on the information given (e.g., above examples would be ``1992'' and ``Sep 93'', respectively).
7 (17.5%) 1991 [3 Mar, 2 Apr, 1 Dec *] 4 (10.0%) 1992 [1 mid, 1 late *] 9 (22.5%) 1993 [1 early-mid, 1 summer, 1 Feb, 1 May, 3 Sep *] 6 (15.0%) 1994 [1 fall, 1 May, 1 Oct, 1 Dec *] 5 (12.5%) 1995 [1 Apr, 1 Oct, 1 Nov *] 8 (20.0%) 1996 [1 summer, 1 fall, 1 May, 1 Jul, 1 Sep, 1 Oct, 2 Nov] 1 ( 2.5%) 1997 [1 Jan] * = the rest only gave the year
These results are surprisingly uniform (across years), in my opinion. Last year, almost 40% of respondents said 1991. I suppose part of the reason for this is her increased visibility since STTW started, but I can't help but wonder whether it's partially due to attrition of longtime list members over the past year. The next question may shed some light on this conjecture.

  10 (25.6%) 1997 [2 Jan, 2 Feb, 3 Mar, 3 Apr]
  * = the other person only gave the year
The list was created in Feb 92, by the way. (Oh, and if you're interested, I joined in Jan 95.)
These results pretty much echo those of last year. The majority of list members -- those who answer the poll, anyway -- are relatively new, joining within in the previous 16 months before the poll. (Last year this described roughly 80% of respondents, this year 72%.)
However, looking at it in absolute terms we find a stark contrast between this year and last (in my opinion). In the 1996 poll, 8 respondents had joined the list (or at least heard about it) in the first 3 years of its existence (1992-94), whereas only 3 of this year's respondents can make the same claim (same number of respondents on this particular item both years: 39). This seems to me to be a significant finding.

As in question 22, I'll first summarize, then give the full, unedited responses.
Each response is classified two ways...
28 (68.3%) single list 9 (22.0%) nothing said about number of lists 1 ( 2.4%) create list for Melissa news only 1 ( 2.4%) create list for STTW 1 ( 2.4%) create different lists for different subjects 1 ( 2.4%) unknown [see (*) below]

(+)
(*)
create "melissa" as alias of "clarissa"
We seem to agree that a single list is best, but we're almost evenly divided as to whether it should be renamed. The suggestion to just make ``melissa'' and ``clarissa'' refer to the same list is interesting; I never thought about that.
(Note: Contrary to the header above, I have edited some of the responses. In what follows, ``[...]'' refers to the current domain of the list, which I removed to cut down on junk e-mail coming into that domain.)
As I mentionned to you a while back it might be an idea to have a
Melissa News list as well as the regular discussion one in case
someone doesn't want to receive all the 'important information'
some people dream up. But on the other hand, the work involved
might not be worth it as I've noticed that since the new year
the number of messages per day has really dried up from like 50
a day to like 7 or so. I think the name needs to be changed,
Melissa perhaps? I think for this weighty matter a little
      referendum needs to be called.
  A single list is fine.
Call it whatever you want, but keep all the news in one list.
Changing the name would be interesting since I first ignored it
thinking "Oh, a CEIA mailing list, where is the STTW one?".
Several lists? I don't think there is enough traffic for that
      yet.
  Creating Melissa.
Definitely keep it one list, but renaming it would probably be a
good idea. "melissa" would be my first choice.
  different lists for different subjects
  how about melissa@[...]
  I'd rather things remain unchanged.
I'd rather things stay as is (remember how long we kept on getting
ferkel mail... mail probably *still* goes there...).
I like the fact it is called Clarissa, this was her best work to
      date.
I prefer keeping the list the way it is now and not creating any new
      ones.
I think a single list is best but I don't give a rat's behind what
it's called. Hey, in fact, why not call it
      "rats-behind@[...]"? :)
I think as time goes by the name becomes more of a problem.
Eventually a change needs to be made, and I think the right
thing to do would be simply changing to "Melissa" and NOT
      changing the definition of what's on-topic and what's off-topic.
      Nothing changes but the name.
I think Melissa would be the right name
I think that there should be one list called, for clarity's sake,
"melissa". It's a little misleading to call it "clarissa,"
especially now that we have STTW to talk about.
It should stay "clarissa". To rename it would be to deny its
history. Makeovers and corporate relaunches are always a
mistake. Only people who are not really Melissa fans would
object to it being called clarissa.
I would like the list to remain as one list, but with the name
      Melissa.
I would prefer it remain the "clarissa" list.
Keep it all on one list and rename it "Melissa". The mix of topics
is what makes it so interesting.
  keep it like it is
MJH/CEIA/STTW list?? i don't really care as long as it on topic!
Name change was discussed way back when the List was created. It
stuck. It's fine. Leave it be.
One list is enough! Because I would subscribe to all of them and so
I could get three times the same message. The name of the list
doesn't matter. But now, if it will move,
      Melissa@somewhere_else.com is OK.
One List Maybe the Melissa/Clarissa/Sabrina Discussion List
Prefer to have one list. If they want to have all info about MJH I
don't have a problem with changing the name.
Previously I thought it was a good idea to rename the list but I
don't anymore. I would feel sad if the clarissa@[...] address
was lost, However it could be engineered that people could also
post to the address melissa@[...] aswell, (either address
would work for the list, or maybe thats a waste of resources?)
  Remain
  remain same.
  Rename it Melissa.
Renaming it 'melissa' seems like a good idea, but I think there
should only be one list for all MJH-related subjects.
  Same
  single list
Single list and renaming to melissa (but not of necessity).
  single list called "clarissa"
single list called Clarisa or Melissa
  single list called Melissa
  STTW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The list should remain as one, but it might be better to name it
after Melissa, since little of the discussion is about CEIA now.
things should remain as they are now (i.e., single list called
      "clarissa")
We should keep a list for full discussion of all aspects of CEIA.
We should not call that list "melissa," regardless of what else
is discussed there. "clarissa" is a more interesting,
meaningful name. There are advantages to having a single list,
although I'd like a way for posters to mark their messages as
being related to CEIA or not, etc., for them to be automatically
separated at the request of subscribers. Unfortunately, most
posters probably wouldn't use this feature properly.

  ALL HAIL MELISSA!
Before I joined the list I pretty much thought I was the only
Melissaphile in the world. Besides giving me a lot of great
information, it's provided a good deal of solace; it's good to
know there are others out there who share your obsession! :-)
I am happy for Sabrina's success and love watching the show, but it
is not of the quality I want.
"I believe the mailing list is an invaluable supply of Melissa
information, without it I'm not quite sure where I'd be. Just
think, I wouldn't know when she was on TV! I'd miss her
appearances! How could I live?" "Its a shame the list
sometimes gets flooded with nonsense, but if thats the price to
pay I'll pay it happily." "Why couldn't someone trustworthy on
the list be given the same powers as the list master (James
Lick), someone trustworthy like Donald Lancon as problem posts
need to be dealt with much more quickly."
If you were to look at my poll response from last year and compare
it you'd see that I've become a more intense (obsessed) MJH fan
over the last year. That's either a tribute to MJH's charisma,
charm, and acting talent, or a sad commentary on the emptiness
and sterility of my miserable life.
I generally found the specific episodes of CEIA more distinct and
memorable than those of STTW. (It's possible this is partly due
to the circumstances of my viewing as opposed to the shows.) We
need more shows with the sort of spirit that went into CEIA, and
the willingness to do things in unconventional ways such as the
ones we saw in CEIA. But it must be done with enough competence
and dedication to come out right. In particular, the style
should not appear to be just a gimmick!
I have a Java Chat Room. If we can get MJH on I would be willing to
set up a private room just for List people
I've been a big fan of hers for several years. My dream is to one
      day meet her in person.
I was surprised by Melissa saying that she was just reading her
lines on CEIA and was now on STTW concentrating more on Jokes,
timing and acting. By my comparisons of the two shows there
appears to be something amiss with that statement
I would like to see Clarissa get out of the "specialized" roles and
do mainstream movies and different television shows. Her acting
abilities seem to be vastly underused in STTW and she would get
a lot more exposure and possibly more success if she were to get
into movies. Actually, I feel that STTW is poorly written, and
is not funny. Melissa, in my opinion, would make a faster move
to movies if she had a different manager; Melissa's mother is
preventing her from taking on bigger roles in favor of the STTW
series. I doubt that Paula Hart has such influence yet in
Hollywood to help fulfill Melissa's desire to act in full
feature films. But this is, after all, just my opinion.
I would see more of Melissa if I could, but I can only get CEIA and
      STTW in Australia
Melissa Rocks! She is the next big thing! Thanks for doing this
      list.
  Please stay on topic
Thankyou Donald L. for the time and effort you put into this, and
respect to Melissa for pursueing a career in showbusiness to
      make it all possible :-)
We need more girls like Clarissa :)
